Projects

Air Sea Heritage Foundation and its partners study, investigate and preserve relics, sites, wrecks, and stories related to aviation and maritime history. Through the foundation’s support and/or involvement in original field expeditions and archival research, we’re pleased to share insights into our most recent projects.

ex-USS Stewart (DD-224)

In August 2024, Air/Sea Heritage Foundation was privileged to partner with Ocean Infinity and SEARCH, Inc to find the wreck of the ex-USS Stewart (DD-224), a century-old US Navy destroyer that served under both American and Japanese flags during World War II. This groundbreaking discovery was made off the coast of northern California during a collaborative expedition that also included NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC).

Clipper Endeavor (NC88899)

Learn about Air/Sea Heritage Foundation’s ongoing efforts to locate and identify the wreck of Clipper Endeavor (NC88899), a Pan American World Airways Douglas DC-4 passenger plane that ditched into the waters off San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 11, 1952. Only 17 of 69 people on board survived the accident, prompting the adoption of mandatory pre-flight safety briefings, which have saved countless lives. Discovery of the site will both aid in its protection and, hopefully, bring long overdue appreciation and recognition to the lasting impact of this tragedy.
